There was an article in the NZZ a couple of weeks ago about the fact that we read a lot from people's appearance - it's not like her voice is THAT amazing, just unexpectedly good. They made an interesting comparison to the American girl who allegedly killed her flatmate in Italy, forgot her name ("angel's face") - she's so pretty and innocent-looking that nobody thinks she's capable of doing it.
Am doing Jekyll and Hyde at the moment, and 19th century physiognomy, interesting link to this!

Definitely about looks and assumptions. And with Susan Boyle, also the way that is stressed in the show (can't remember the word 'village', the incongruent hip swing - and the reaction of audience and the judges).
